We'reĀ focusing on crime prevention programs on college campuses this week.
Students at Xavier will be moving back to campus in a week... and the university police want to keep them safe.
Ken Grossman is the Crime Prevention Officer.
He's been patrolling campus for 10 years and says he's seen the department's involvement grow... creating programs to address the need.
The biggest problem on campus- theft. Officer Grossman says it's usually opportunity theft... if something is sitting out- it's stolen.
That's where these "ripped off" cards come into play-- officers leave them out on things like laptops or bookbags- to let the owner know they could have been stolen.
Another concern for University police... educating students about date rape.
"I would rather spend the hour to teach then fill out the reporter after. It's an emotional thing- rape. We also have an Advocacy program. It gets people in to counsel rape survivors. It's a practical approach with education and dealing with the crime itself."
Another resource available on campus,, a women's self defense class that's hands on.
Xavier police also have programs on identity theft,, binge drinking,, and fire safety.
Officer Grossman says the department has an open door policy... he encourages students to stop by if they have a concern.
