It's not just for hotels with fancy restaurants anymore. The newest trend in hospital food now includes room service. The latest to allow you to order-up is Christ Hospital in Mount Auburn.

Local 12 Medical Reporter Liz Bonis shows us what's on the menu in tonight's Medical Edge.

Lunchtime is traditionally a pretty busy time in any hospital kitchen, but what's happening in this kitchen is anything but traditional. Rather than the standard meal-trays being sent to all patient rooms, the first step in this patient meal process starts here in a classic cuisine call center.

Rohn Vickers, Christ Hospital Food & Nutrition: "They walk the patient through what they'd like to select, read it back them, and then the person gets that order into the system."

The computers in this call center help customize the menu for diet restrictions, such as low sodium or sugar. A printer then prints up the menu request. Breakfast is even available all day, in case you really need to rest up! Once the order is made, side dishes are added and it's immediately placed on a hot cart for transport.

"But what makes this so unique is not just preparation, but also delivery, it might be something you'd want in a restaurant or even at home."

Room service anyone? This classic cuisine is now part of a growing trend in hospital food, much like in a hotel, the food is personally delivered when you want to eat it. For heart patients, such as Claire Smith, the response is much like you'd get from those staying in a hotel, too.

"Oh, it's lovely, everything is good."

Smith says she's been in the hospital nearly two weeks and barely ordered the same thing twice! Hospital staff says the room service menu actually saves money. There's less waste because people only order food they want to eat. Several other Tri-State hospitals, including Children's, now have similar food systems.
