Materials
-An empty 16oz. soda bottle

-Cork, paper towel, tape, toilet paper

-Lemon juice, water

-Baking soda

-Scissors, safety glasses

Procedure
Cut a paper towel or streamer into a few strips. Attach the strips to the top of the cork with tape. Put about a teaspoon of baking soda on a small square of toilet paper. Fold the sides of the toilet paper in to form a packet of baking soda. Pour about 1/4 cup of lemon juice into the plastic bottle. Add enough water to fill the bottle about 1/2 way to the top.
Drop the baking soda packet into the lemon mixture, quickly put the cork in the bottle, shake the mixture, and put the bottle down quickl. Make sure you are wearing safety glasses because the cork should take off like a rocket. You can try this with other acids like cola and vinegar.

What's Going On?

Lemon juice is an acid and baking soda is a base. When the two are mixed carbon dioxide is created. The gas bubbles up in the bottle and pop goes the cork-off goes the rocket! Baking soda mixed with most any acid will result in sodium, water, and gas.
